The process of resawing lumber yields beautiful results however you do run the risk of inducing a small warp. With the right techniques and tools, you can tackle any issue that may arise. What is thin wood? We typically consider 1/4"/6mm or less to be thin wood. When would you use thin wood? Decorative applications are the most popular reason why a woodworker chooses to use thin wood. It is great for scroll saw projects, intarsia, luthiery, and other small projects. Understanding why wood warps Warping occurs when wood dries unevenly or reacts to changes in moisture and temperature. When resawing, the process releases tensions in the board and may also induce warping. Thin wood is particularly susceptible due to its lack of rigidity and high surface area relative to its thickness. Common types of warp include: Cup: When the edges of the board rise Bow: When the ends of the board rise Twist: When the board cups & bows Crook: When the board curves along its length What do I do if my wood arrives "warped"? Firstly, this is in the realm of normal and is not considered a defect so refunds are not applicable. Simply use clamps and/or heat to bring your piece back to normal! Here are our two favourite methods: Moisten & ClampLightly moisten the warped area, then use clamps to press it flat. Allow the wood to dry in the clamped position. Heat TreatmentApplying heat can also help reshape warped wood. Use a heat gun carefully to warm the wood, then clamp it flat and let it cool. There are so many factors that can come into play when a material won’t cooperate on your laser bed; how you store your materials, whether there’s moisture in the air, a variation in the thickness of the plywood, or the fact that most laser materials are thin and susceptible to warping. This is where TruFlat® is changing the game when it comes to laser projects. Since this article was first published, TruFlat® has expanded its lineup with the introduction of Cherry TruFlat®. Bringing the same guaranteed-flat, pre-finished convenience you love, now with an elegant engineered cherry wood face. For laser enthusiasts looking to add a warm, rich wood aesthetic to their projects without sacrificing consistency, Cherry TruFlat® is a natural next step. Like the original, it features a clear acrylic finish on both sides, requires no masking, and is pressed onto a defect-free MDF core for uniform 3mm thickness across every sheet. What is TruFlat® Plywood? TruFlat® is an innovative & custom-engineered laser material which eliminates the guesswork when it comes to your projects. The MDF core ensures a uniform thickness throughout the sheet, meaning your cuts and engravings will be consistent. In the end, this will save you time since you don’t need to constantly adjust your settings, and will result in less wasted materials. With a clear acrylic finish on both sides, you can forgo masking since any char marks will simply wipe right off. This also means that your paint fills become a breeze - simply apply your preferred acrylic paint over the engraved area, and remove the excess with a damp wipe. Diode lasers have a few more limitations than C02 lasers, so TruFlat® plywood was engineered to be an excellent option for all laser users. Sometimes white materials can give diode users some issues, but since all of our colour options are on an MDF core this should eliminate those issues across the board. As with all laser materials, we recommend running material tests to dial in your settings, and it is good practice to run them at least once with each new batch of products you purchase. Settings will vary between brands and wattages of lasers - a Mira 7 60W next to another could have entirely different settings, so it’s always good to learn your laser’s limitations on a case by case basis for products you’re going to be using. With that said, we’ve compiled a list of settings for varying machines and wattages as a place for you to start with your laser’s settings test - you can find it here. What is the difference between TruFlat® and Baltic Birch Plywood? Baltic birch plywood that is safe for laser cutting is a very versatile option for your projects, but it can have some downfalls. Because it is made from layers of wood veneers and glue, there can be a higher margin for changes of thickness throughout the sheet you’re working with. This can be glue patches that cause more charring than normal, or spots that just don’t seem to cut all the way through with your tried and true settings. It also has unfinished faces, which can mean you need to sand them down before you put it in your laser. Adding masking is sometimes required to avoid added char marks on an already sanded piece of plywood, or if you’re adding a paint fill afterward it is necessary to mask to protect the areas outside of the engraving from getting paint on them. By all accounts, baltic birch is an entirely different material for your laser projects. Making the switch to TruFlat® gives you professional looking projects with less work to get you there. No more sanding or masking, and the clear finish elevates a finished piece to help your work stand out among the rest. What if I’m having trouble cutting TruFlat®? All lasers are different - one 60W machine may require completely different settings compared to another 60W machine, even of the same brand. As with all laser materials, we recommend running a material test for each new sheet to ensure that your settings are as accurate as possible, followed by checking mirror alignment and that your lens is clean/free of damage. Wood for Scroll Saw Toddler Projects If you’re making projects for babies/toddlers, keep in mind that those little hands like to explore, that can often mean putting items in their mouths. There are certain products and wood species that shouldn’t end up in a tiny mouth, or any mouth for that matter. MDF and plywood materials have resins/glue that shouldn’t be ingested, so it’s best to stick to hardwoods that are dense, and won’t break easily if they are dropped and create sharp edges or tiny pieces. In this application, we recommend sticking with maple, birch, oaks or ash. Wood for Scroll Saw Mosaics If you’re adventurous enough to try out some mosaic designs, our ¼” thins are an excellent option to be able to play around with grain patterns and alternating colours. ¼” is a breeze to cut through, even with more dense woods, and this also provides an opportunity to play around with different species without committing to larger pieces of wood. In our personal experience as scroll saw enthusiasts, a couple of layers of baltic birch paired with some ½” thick hardwood is a great way to pair a darker or “fun” coloured wood with a simple background for name puzzles. For beginners, it’s a great way to practice your scroll skills on some bubbly and chunky lettering, while also tackling a few different materials to get a feel for how the saw works and what your ideal tension is for different materials. Best Wood for Scroll Saw Signs The sign making world seems to have exploded in the past few years, and thanks to some of our favourite makers (we’re looking at you Lizzy from @thehouseoftimber and Marissa from @pearlandpine) and MDF has become a hugely popular material. It cuts like butter, and when you nail your finishing techniques with paint, you would have no idea that it’s a man-made and cost effective material being placed on your finished project. For those who like to have the look of wood grain for their project, but can get away with an alternative material, our veneered craft ply has been a game changer for our scroll saw community. It’s got an MDF core with veneer faces, so you get the benefits of MDF with the appearance of solid wood. For this product, it’s best to try some samples for how to finish your pieces, because you don’t want to have a finish being applied to the MDF that will cause the core to swell. A light coat of finish that you can wipe on and buff out quickly is an excellent Option. Blades for Scroll Saw Projects Once you’ve got your materials sorted out, you don’t want to end up trying to cut it with the wrong blades. We’ve been working with Pegas blades and we can’t say enough good things about them. They’ve got a variety of options that will help you cut through thin material and create fine details, or be able to chew through thick hardwoods with ease. They’ve got a really handy spreadsheet to detail which blades will work best for your project, and we’ll link it here. Our favourite blades are the Modified Geometry in size 5 - they’ll cut through MDF like butter with super smooth edges that don’t need any sanding before they’re primed & painted. The MFG #7 will make easy work of hardwoods, especially cutting through some ¾” walnuts for these cute name puzzles.
