Appearance
Purpleheart wood is a colour shifter to be sure. When freshly cut, it’s a greyish, purply brown colour but after some time it becomes the eggplant colour we all recognize. Further exposure to UV turns it dark brown with a hint of purple.
Workability
Not known for its easy workability, Purpleheart lumber is a tough type of wood that can dull tools and become gummy if cutters are dull or causing too much heat.
Uses
Inlays and accent pieces are great uses for rough cut Purpleheart lumber. It can also be used for furniture, boatbuilding, and much more.
Additional Comments
Like many bright coloured woods, a little goes a long way. A splash of colour can add a tremendous design statement.

Why Choose Purpleheart Wood?
Purpleheart is exactly what it sounds like. It's a strikingly vibrant purple wood that comes from Central and South America and there is truly nothing else like it. When you first cut into it the wood starts out a dull grayish brown, but once it's exposed to light and air it transforms into that deep, rich purple color that stops people in their tracks the first time they see it. It's extremely dense and hard, making it one of the most durable hardwoods you can work with, and it's naturally resistant to rot, insects, and moisture. That combination of beauty and toughness makes it a popular choice for furniture accents, inlays, cutting boards, and decorative pieces where you want a pop of color that no stain could ever replicate. It's also used in flooring, skateboard decks, and even boat building because of how well it holds up under stress. The one thing to know is that prolonged UV exposure will eventually shift the color toward a darker brown, so a UV protective finish will keep that purple looking its best for years to come.
