Appearance

The heartwood is a light to medium brown with a reddish cast while the sapwood is a bit lighter. Quartersawn surfaces have the prominent ray fleck and the grain is very coarse.

Workability

Works well with both hand and power tools. Red Oak can be steam bent with good results. It glues well and takes finish well though a pore filler may be desired to fill in the coarse grain.

Uses

Often used for cabinetry, furniture, flooring, and interior trim.

Additional Comments

Red Oak is the Nickelback of woods with many disliking it. Some of the causes of this dislike could be its dimensional instability, coarse grain, or the fact that 90% of kitchens in the 1980’s were made from it.

Why choose Red Oak Wood?

Red Oak is the most widely used hardwood in North America and it has earned that title. It has a warm pinkish to light brown color with a pronounced open grain and ray flecks that give it a bold, classic look that has been a staple of American homes for generations. It is hard, strong, and widely available which makes it one of the most affordable domestic hardwoods you can work with. That combination of durability and value is why it is the default choice for flooring, cabinetry, and furniture where you need a wood that performs well and looks great without breaking the budget. It machines and stains well though its open grain means it benefits from a good grain filler before finishing if you want a smooth surface.
