Appearance

The heart wood of this wood is a beautiful light pinkish brown when freshly cut and darkens to a rich medium reddish brown as it ages and is exposed to light. The sap wood is a creamy pale-yellow colour and there are occasional dark red/black pitch pockets.

Workability

Cherry is coveted by furniture and cabinet makers for its easy workability and even colouring. Even curly or figured pieces plane and machine well. Beware if you are planing to stain cherry because the stain is absorbed unevenly and can lead to a blotchy result. Be sure to seal with shellac or sanding sealer prior to any staining.

Uses

Cabinetry, fine furniture, veneer, flooring, interior millwork, and turnings.

Additional Comments

It does not take long for Cherry to change colour and darken. Be aware that direct sunlight while working it can cause undesirable tan lines.

Why Choose Cherry Lumber?

Cherry is one of the most beloved hardwoods in American furniture making and has been for centuries. It has a warm, reddish brown color with a straight fine grain that gives it a natural elegance that very few woods can match right out of the gate. What makes Cherry truly special is how it ages, because it darkens and deepens significantly with exposure to light over time, developing a rich patina that makes a piece look better with every passing year. It is moderately hard, machines and finishes beautifully, and has a natural luster that almost glows under a clear finish. That combination of beauty and workability makes it a top choice for fine furniture, cabinetry, and musical instruments. If you want a wood that gets more beautiful the older it gets, Cherry is the one.
