Appearance

Despite the name, it’s not really orange…more of a golden to bright yellow. Over time the wood darkens to a medium brown.

Workability

Osage Orange is a difficult wood to work with because it is extremely hard and dense. It turns very well and has no issues with gluing or finishing.

Uses

Bow making, instruments, and fence posts.

Additional Comments

Osage Orange is a gnarly tree that often has a crooked trunk that makes it impossible to use as lumber. That being said, the wood is very stable and bends without breaking which explains its use by bowyers.

Why choose Osage Orange Wood?

Osage Orange is a wood that earns your respect the moment you work with it. It has a bright golden yellow color unlike almost anything else, and while it mellows to a deeper honey brown over time it never loses that warmth. It is one of the hardest and most rot resistant woods which is why it was the go-to choice for fence posts and tool handles for generations. That hardness also makes it a popular choice for archery bows, mallet heads, and knife handles where strength is everything. It is a challenge to work with but it finishes beautifully and that golden color under a clear finish is something you have to see in person.
