Appearance

The torrefaction process turns the wood a beautiful chocolate brown and the curl can range from tight to loose (sometimes called flame). Oil finishes will make this flame figure jump out of the surface which will draw the eye. The lack of colour distinction between annular growth rings however, gives it a somewhat boring, homogenous appearance.

Workability

Roasted Curly Birch works equally well with hand and power tools, keeping in mind that figured boards will be prone to tearout. There are no concerns with glues or finishes and it also turns well.

Uses

It’s suitable for furniture, decorative objects, doors, trim, and panelling.

Additional Comments

Birch is a great species to use as a secondary wood for hidden furniture components, drawer sides.

Why choose Roasted Curly Birch Wood?

Roasted Curly Birch is what happens when two of the most desirable qualities in wood come together in one board. The roasting process takes Curly Birch and transforms its naturally pale color into a rich, warm brown that runs all the way through, while that curly figure underneath catches the light and creates the same shifting, three dimensional effect that makes curly wood so sought after. The heat treatment also makes it more stable and resistant to moisture than untreated birch which adds to its versatility. It is a popular choice for knife handles, guitar necks, and decorative accents where that combination of figure and color makes every piece feel one of a kind. A clear finish is always the right call because it brings that warmth and figure to life in a way that nothing else can.
