Appearance

Wenge has a distinctive look with a medium brown heartwood filled with nearly black streaks throughout. The grain is straight and extremely coarse.

Workability

This is not a wood species for the faint of heart. It is extremely difficult to work with hand or power tools and it will dull edges quickly. It doesn’t even sand well because of the changing densities in the wood. The pores are huge and require filling in order to achieve a level finish.

Uses

Wenge is used for furniture, turnings, and musical instruments.

Additional Comments

The slivers from this wood are plentiful and nasty. They often get lodged in the skin and can go septic. Wearing gloves can be helpful but not 100% foolproof.

Why choose Wenge Wood?

Wenge is a bold and extremely dense hardwood known for its deep brown to nearly black color and natural striping. It has a coarse texture and a very open grain that gives it a raw, modern look. This wood is incredibly hard and durable, making it a strong choice for flooring, furniture, and high-end accents that need to last. Because of its dark color, it’s often used as a natural alternative to stained woods for a clean, modern aesthetic. Wenge can be difficult to work with. It dulls tools quickly, can splinter easily, and requires care when handling and machining. The large, open pores can also make achieving a perfectly smooth finish more challenging. Despite this, it finishes well when properly prepared and offers a unique look that few woods can match.
