Sometimes referred to as “White Walnut”, this species provides carvers with a great “in-between” wood darker than basswood or balsa wood, but lighter and softer than walnut. Butternut boasts a distinct grain pattern of a darker hue than the surrounding heartwood, although the pattern of the grain is typically straight and easy to work with. This wood is delightfully soft, making it ideal for hand carving with great detail!
