Appearance

The sapwood is a creamy white colour while the heartwood is a light red/brown. You will occasionally see a beautiful lazy curl in this wood, often referred to as flame. Oil finishes will make this flame figure jump out of the surface which will draw the eye. The lack of colour distinction between annular growth rings however, gives it a somewhat boring, homogenous appearance.

Workability

Works equally well with hand and power tools, keeping in mind that figured boards will be prone to tearout. There are no concerns with glues or finishes and it also turns well.

Uses

There really isn’t much that you can’t do with yellow birch. It’s suitable for furniture, decorative objects, doors, trim, and panelling. It is also one of the most widely used species for veneer and plywood.

Additional Comments

Yellow birch is a great species to use as a secondary wood for hidden furniture components and drawer sides. Birch plywood is also a great choice for constructing frame and panel doors.

Why choose Birch Wood?

Yellow Birch is one of the most dependable and underrated hardwoods in North America. It gets its name from the subtle golden yellow tint of its heartwood and the silvery yellow gleam of its bark, and up close it has a fine, uniform grain with a natural luster that gives it a clean and polished look without much effort. It is hard, strong, and resistant to shock which is why it has long been the standard choice for hardwood flooring, cabinetry, and furniture in homes where durability is a priority. Yellow Birch is also the wood behind a lot of things you use every day without realizing it, from kitchen cabinets and interior doors to wooden toys and tool handles because it holds up to repeated use without wearing down. It machines and sands beautifully and takes stain well, though it looks just as good with a simple clear finish that lets that natural golden tone come through. Yellow Birch is the kind of wood that does everything well and never gives you a reason to complain.
